Student Learning Objectives
Students who complete ME 252 should be able to:
- Explain the relations between atomic structure, microstructure, and material properties for metals, ceramics, and polymers.
- Specify the Miller indices for a plane and a direction.
- Explain the imperfections in solids.
- Describe elastic and plastic deformation mechanism at atomic level.
- Describe three strengthening mechanisms.
- Calculate longitudinal modulus and longitudinal strength for an aligned and continuous fiber reinforced composite.
- Solve problems involving diffusion, cold work, and solidification for metals.
- Describe the regions in a phase diagram and analyze the constituents.
- Explain the effects of standard heat treatments on steel.
