ME 252 - Materials Science

Student Learning Objectives

Students who complete ME 252 should be able to:

  1. Explain the relations between atomic structure, microstructure, and material properties for metals, ceramics, and polymers.
  2. Specify the Miller indices for a plane and a direction.
  3. Explain the imperfections in solids.
  4. Describe elastic and plastic deformation mechanism at atomic level.
  5. Describe three strengthening mechanisms.
  6. Calculate longitudinal modulus and longitudinal strength for an aligned and continuous fiber reinforced composite.
  7. Solve problems involving diffusion, cold work, and solidification for metals.
  8. Describe the regions in a phase diagram and analyze the constituents.
  9. Explain the effects of standard heat treatments on steel.
